RESEARCH - GENERAL

The label Made in Germany has become synonymous with quality and precision. Products Made in Germany are designed by people trained in Germany, such as graduates from RWTH Aachen University, one of the most prestigious universities of technology in Europe.

RWTH Aachen University is a member of the IDEA league (http://www.idealeague.org/), a cooperation of the most prestigious universities of technology in Europe: I – Imperial College London, D- TU Delft, E – ETH Zürich and A – RWTH Aachen. Recently, ParisTech also joined. All IDEA League partners cover leading research themes and have strong relationships with industry, and there is considerable common ground in research between the IDEA universities.

The Oman-German University of Technology (OGTech) is affiliated to RWTH Aachen University and will strive to become the leading university of technology in the region, following the successful RWTH story. The research model will be characterised by that for which RWTH Aachen has become renowned, with a network of scientific, economic and academic structures, which will result in significant third-party research funding and technology spin-offs. OGTech also aims to position itself as a centre of excellence in research within the region, running workshops with a prime focus on research and development and establishing close links with industry to optimise the employability of its graduates.

OGTech will offer a wide range of programmes, and students will be encouraged to extend their boundaries across different subjects during their training. Such mutual understanding overcomes bridges and often leads to vital developments.

By following the model of RWTH Aachen, OGTech is committed to fostering creative and critical thinking for the advancement of research, with the aim of benefiting society, industry and the region.

Applied Geosciences

You may think rocks are solid and boring, but they are the key to societies prosperity. Rocks host deposits such as ore, oil and gas. They are not only required to make bricks or cement, but also to make paint and semiconductors. No computer or car can be made without a sound knowledge of where and how to find corresponding rocks, or any surgery without a needle to stitch the wound.

Research focuses on aspects such as the oil and gas sector, ore deposits and water. This covers subjects such as overpressure formation and dissipation in rocks, fracture formation and sealing, salt tectonics and deformation microstructures, geochemistry of hydrocarbons, and numerical modelling from micro to basin scale. It also explores the potential of geothermal energy, and strives at better understanding the water in the earth’s subsurface. A good understanding of the subsurface also protects the environment and nature from pollution.

Applied research is funded by major oil and gas industry organisations, as well as smaller companies tackling problems too small to set up their own team of experts.

Urban Planning and Architectural Design

Have you ever thought about a smarter design for your house, or been frustrated while stuck in traffic? Ever wondered how our ancestors survived without air-conditioning? It’s all about smart design, partly passed on over the centuries, partly lost and now re-discovered. You can make the world more beautiful and daily life more pleasant.

Research focuses on optimised building technologies for the region, the study of building technologies of the past and smart designs of towns and corresponding infrastructure.

Regional Management and Tourism

It is not wise to locate an industrial area within the city centre, but how can you foresee or control this, how can you design sites for beneficial industrial cooperation? How are regions developed, what instruments are used to enhance the settlement of industry and tourism?

Research focuses on strategies to develop regions, enhance and guide prosperity and growth. You will plan and manage future growth and prosperity of regions.

Applied Information Technology

It’s nice to use computers and different types of software, but who squeezes music into an mpg file (by the way, originally Made in Germany) and makes sure that your mobile works? Whether you step onto a plane or drive a car or whether you take your savings from a bank or collect data to optimise the service of an establishment, these days nothing works without information technology.
